Swiss Family Card 2026: How Kids Travel Free in Switzerland

The Swiss Family Card is a free card that lets children aged 6 to 15 travel free on Swiss trains, buses and boats when they are with a parent who holds a Swiss Travel Pass, a Swiss Travel Pass Flex or a Swiss Half Fare Card. It costs nothing, is valid for one month, works on panoramic trains (seat reservation extra) and, according to Swiss Travel System, also on mountain excursions where the parent holds the required ticket. Children under 6 travel free anyway. For a family it means that the choice between pass and Half Fare Card is made for the parents alone: on a typical six-day trip the Family Card saves about CHF 130 per child on transport. The catch: it only exists for families living outside Switzerland, a parent must be there, and some mountain railways handle it their own way. We did not travel with children or with a pass on our own week in the Bernese Oberland, so this guide is built on the official Swiss Travel System rules, operator price lists and the calculations from our Swiss Travel Pass guide. It is part of our overview of Swiss rail passes.

What the Swiss Family Card is

The Swiss Family Card is a free add-on to the national passes of Swiss Travel System. If at least one parent has a Swiss Travel Pass, a Swiss Travel Pass Flex or a Swiss Half Fare Card, the children from 6 to 15 ride with that parent for free on the whole network.

It is the visitor version of what Swiss families have long had with the Junior Travelcard. You order it together with the parent’s pass, or later, as an electronic ticket. Swiss Activities, for example, lists it as a mobile ticket for CHF 0. Without the card, a child pays half fare on every ticket, so on a family trip it is one of the most valuable things you can get for free in Switzerland.

Because the card is free and works with both the Swiss Travel Pass and the Half Fare Card, it does not change which of the two is cheaper. It simply takes the children out of the calculation.

The rules in detail

The Swiss Family Card is free, valid for one month from issue, and only for children aged 6 to 15 who travel with at least one parent holding a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex or Swiss Half Fare Card. The family must live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

  • Age: from the 6th birthday up to the day before the 16th birthday. Under 6, children travel free anyway. From 16, a young traveller needs their own ticket, and the Swiss Travel Pass Youth is about 30 percent cheaper than the adult pass.
  • Parent: the official wording is “accompanied by a parent”. Grandparents, aunts or friends are not mentioned in the rules, so do not count on the card when the child travels with them.
  • One parent is enough: only the parent the child travels with needs a qualifying pass. If the family splits up for a day, the children go with that parent.
  • Flex days: with a Swiss Travel Pass Flex, plan the children’s rides on the parent’s activated days; on other days the parent has no valid ticket either.
  • Number of children: the rules give no limit.
  • Without a parent: children travelling alone or with other adults get 50 percent on the Swiss Travel Pass or pay half fare or the minimum fare on tickets.
  • Booking window: up to 11 months before the first day of validity.

The card is personal, so it carries the child’s name. Keep a passport or ID for each child on your phone or in your bag; inspectors can ask for proof of age.

How much a family saves

On a six-day trip from Zurich Airport via Interlaken to Lucerne, the transport alone costs a child about CHF 132 at half fare. With the Swiss Family Card that child travels free, so two children save about CHF 264, and on mountain days often more.

We built the numbers on the six-day example from our Swiss Travel Pass guide, which uses SBB full fares from October 2026:

Six days, per child aged 6 to 15 Without Family Card, CHF With Family Card, CHF
Zurich Airport to Interlaken Ost 38.50 0
Interlaken Ost to Stechelberg return 12.40 0
Lake Brienz boat day pass 37.00 0
Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald return 11.80 0
Interlaken Ost to Lucerne 17.00 0
Lucerne to Zurich Airport 15.50 0
Transport per child 132.20 (≈ US$160) 0

Child fares are the half-fare prices from that table, which is what children aged 6 to 15 pay without the card. Mountain railways are not in this table, because children’s prices and the handling of the Family Card differ between operators; the official rule says children ride free on mountain excursions when the parents hold the required ticket, which would add the Schilthorn and the Rothorn on top.

For the whole family of two adults and two children on the same trip, the result from our Swiss Travel Pass guide still holds: two Half Fare Cards add up to CHF 777.40, two Swiss Travel Passes to CHF 987.40, with the children free in both cases. That is a difference of CHF 210 (about US$254) in favour of the Half Fare Card on that route.

Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card for a family?

For a family the decision is the same as for the parents alone, because the Swiss Family Card works with both. Compare the parents’ costs, and choose the Swiss Travel Pass for long transfer-heavy tours and the Half Fare Card for slower trips in one or two regions.

  • Swiss Half Fare Card (CHF 150 per parent, one month): best when you stay in one region for several days, as most families do. Kids ride free with the Family Card, the parents pay half. Read more in our Half Fare Card guide.
  • Swiss Travel Pass (from CHF 254 for 3 days): best when you cross the country with many long train rides. Kids ride free with the Family Card, and the free museums apply to them too when a parent has the pass.
  • Swiss Travel Pass Flex: good for families who stay put on some days and travel far on others; plan the children’s rides on the parent’s activated travel days. See Flex or consecutive.
  • Only one parent needs a pass if the children always travel with that parent. The second parent can buy single tickets or a regional pass, though in practice families usually travel together and both parents need something.

If the Swiss Travel Pass fits your route, add the Family Card in the same order; the pass price is the same everywhere, and some shops offer discount codes.

Mountains, panoramic trains and museums

Officially, the Swiss Family Card gives children free travel on mountain excursions when their parents hold the required tickets, free rides on panoramic trains with the seat reservation paid in full, and free museum entry when a parent has a Swiss Travel Pass. In practice, ask at each mountain railway, because their own price lists do not always mention the card.

  • Panoramic trains: the Glacier Express lists the Swiss Family Card among valid travel cards. Children ride free, but every passenger pays the seat reservation, CHF 54 per person on the Glacier Express. On the Bernina Express the reservation is also charged in full for children. Our guides to the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express have the details.
  • Oeschinensee: at the gondola in Kandersteg, children with a Swiss Family Card or Junior Card ride free; you exchange the card for a ticket at the info centre at the valley station. We rode this gondola on July 7, 2026 and paid CHF 40 each as adults without any card; families with the Family Card save the children’s fares there. Our Oeschinensee guide explains the rest.
  • Gornergrat: the official 2026/27 price list gives children 6 to 15 a 50 percent reduction and free travel with the Swiss Junior Card, but does not mention the Swiss Family Card. Show the card and ask.
  • Museums: the more than 500 museums of the Swiss Travel Pass are free for children with the Family Card when a parent holds a Swiss Travel Pass. With a Half Fare Card this benefit does not apply.
  • RailAway: up to 50 percent off SBB RailAway combined offers.

Our tip: on mountain days, buy the tickets at the counter rather than online. The staff know how their railway handles the Family Card, and online shops often only offer standard child prices.

Children on regional passes and city cards

The Swiss Family Card only works with the national passes. Regional passes have their own child rules, and they are often cheap: a flat CHF 30 on the Lucerne Travel Pass and the Jungfrau Travel Pass, two children free per adult on the Graubünden Pass, and free travel with the Family Card on the Bernese Oberland Pass.

Pass or card (2026) Children 6 to 15
Swiss Travel Pass, Flex, Half Fare Card free with the Swiss Family Card and a parent
Bernese Oberland Pass free with Swiss Family Card or Junior Card; otherwise child pass
Jungfrau Travel Pass CHF 30 flat
Lucerne Travel Pass CHF 30 flat with an adult pass
Matterhorn Gotthard Pass CHF 66, 78 or 102; family pass CHF 228 to 410
Graubünden Pass free, up to 2 per adult; each further child CHF 30
Zurich Card CHF 19 (24 h) or CHF 37 (72 h)
All public transport under 6 free

What this means in practice: if your family stays in Lucerne for three days with a Lucerne Travel Pass, the two children cost CHF 60 in total, even without any Family Card. If you combine a Half Fare Card for the whole trip with a regional pass for some days, the children ride free on the Half Fare days with the Family Card and pay the regional child price on the regional pass days.

Living in Switzerland? Junior Travelcard

The Swiss Family Card is only for families who live abroad. Families living in Switzerland use the Junior Travelcard, which costs CHF 30 per child per year and is free from the third child, or the Children’s Co-Travel Card for travel with another adult, also CHF 30.

According to BLS, children aged 6 to 16 travel free with a parent who has a valid ticket, and when the adult travels in first class, the child rides along in first class at no extra cost. The Children’s Co-Travel Card is the version for grandparents or other named adults. Both are valid for one year or until the day before the 16th birthday, and both are sold at staffed stations. If you have just moved to Switzerland, this is the card for you, not the Swiss Family Card.

Honest limits

The Swiss Family Card is a very good deal, but it is not a ticket for children on their own, and it does not make every mountain free in practice.

  • Parents only. With grandparents or friends the children pay half fare.
  • Only with the national passes. It does nothing on regional passes such as the Lucerne Travel Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass, or on single tickets bought without a Half Fare Card.
  • Only for visitors. Residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein use the Junior Travelcard.
  • Mountain railways vary. The official rule promises free mountain excursions, but operators’ price lists do not always say so. Expect to ask.
  • Reservations cost full price. Glacier Express, Bernina Express and the Jungfraujoch seat reservation are charged per person, children included.
  • Teenagers from 16 pay. For 16 to 24 there is the cheaper youth pass, but no free ride.

How to get it

You get the Swiss Family Card free when you order a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card, at Swiss Travel System partners, at Swiss stations or from Swiss Activities, where it is listed as a mobile ticket for CHF 0.

  1. Buy the parent’s pass or Half Fare Card for your travel dates.
  2. Add one Family Card per child with the child’s name and date of birth.
  3. Check the dates: the card is valid for one month; it should cover all days the child travels with the parent.
  4. Carry the children’s passports or ID for proof of age.
  5. Reserve seats for everyone on panoramic trains, children included.
