Zurich Airport to Interlaken: Train, Transfer or Rental Car?

The easiest way from Zurich Airport to Interlaken is the train: it takes 2 hours 13 minutes, every second hour there is a direct train with no change, and a full-fare ticket costs CHF 77 in second class (about US$93). A private transfer is about 20 minutes faster to your door but costs around ten times as much, and a rental car is only worth it if you want to drive in the region anyway. One honest note before we start: we did not do this transfer ourselves. On our trip in July 2026 we drove our own car from southern Germany to Brienz, via Basel and Lucerne and over the Brünig Pass. So we checked every connection, fare and driving time below in October 2026 in the SBB timetable and on the operators’ websites, and we tell you where our own drive overlaps with your route. Everything else for planning is collected in our good to know before you go section.

By train: the fastest connection

The train from Zurich Airport (Zürich Flughafen) to Interlaken Ost takes 2 hours 13 minutes on the best connections. Every two hours a direct InterCity runs all the way without a change; in the hours in between you change once in Bern and arrive at the same time.

The airport station is right below the arrivals area, so you walk from baggage claim to the platform without going outside. In the October 2026 timetable the direct trains leave the airport at 6:46, 8:46, 10:46, 12:46, 14:46, 16:46 and 18:46 and arrive at Interlaken Ost at 59 minutes past, 2 hours 13 minutes later, for example 8:46 to 10:59. They run via Zurich main station, Bern, Thun and Spiez, so you sit in one seat for the whole ride, which is the biggest advantage when you arrive tired and with suitcases.

In the odd hours, the train at 46 minutes past runs to Bern, and you switch there to the InterCity to Interlaken, arriving at 59 minutes past as well. A second option leaves at 9 minutes past the hour, also with one change in Bern, and arrives 2 hours 19 minutes later. In practice that means two departures an hour, and you never wait long at the airport.

Departure Zurich Airport (example hour) Arrival Interlaken Ost Duration Changes
8:46 direct InterCity 10:59 2 h 13 none
9:09 InterCity 11:28 2 h 19 Bern
9:46 InterCity 11:59 2 h 13 Bern
10:46 direct InterCity 12:59 2 h 13 none

Two things the timetable will sometimes suggest, which you can usually ignore: connections that first take a short train to Zurich main station and change there, and some afternoon connections with a change in Spiez. They arrive at the same time or later. If your app offers a direct train within half an hour, take it. Changing in Bern is easy, by the way: the trains to Interlaken leave from the same station, you just follow the departure board to the platform shown for Interlaken Ost.

Train tickets: what they cost and how to pay less

A single ticket from Zurich Airport to Interlaken Ost costs CHF 77.00 in second class at full fare (about US$93), and CHF 38.50 with a Half Fare Card. You can buy it in the SBB app, on sbb.ch or at the machines in the airport station; there is no surcharge for buying on the day, and the ticket is valid on any train that day.

That full fare is not the only price you will see. These are the ways to pay less, all checked in October 2026:

  • Swiss Half Fare Card: CHF 150 for one month for visitors living outside Switzerland. It halves this ticket to CHF 38.50 and every other train, bus and boat ticket of your trip, plus most mountain railways.
  • Saver tickets (Sparbillette): SBB sells a limited number of cheaper tickets for a fixed train. On the day we checked, none were left for our sample date ten days ahead, so book early if you want one, and remember they tie you to that train, which is risky after a long-haul flight.
  • Saver Day Pass: for one day of unlimited travel in all of Switzerland, from CHF 52 if booked well in advance. For Wednesday, October 28, bought on October 18, SBB offered it for CHF 79, only CHF 2 more than the single ticket. Worth it if you continue somewhere else on the same day.
  • Swiss Travel Pass: the arrival day can be your first pass day, so the transfer is free. Whether the pass pays off for the rest of your trip is a separate calculation; we did it in our guide is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it.
  • Bernese Oberland Pass: it is only valid from Bern onwards, so you would buy a ticket from the airport to Bern and use the pass from there. Our Bernese Oberland Pass calculation shows when that pays off.
  • Children: under 6 travel free. Children from 6 to 15 travel free with a parent who holds a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card and the free Swiss Family Card.

First class is available on all these trains and is quieter on the busy Zurich to Bern section, but for a two-hour ride most travellers are fine in second. Seat reservations are not needed on this route.

The scenic route via Lucerne

The alternative route goes via Lucerne and over the Brünig Pass on the Luzern-Interlaken Express. It takes about three hours to Interlaken Ost, roughly 45 minutes longer, but it is the more beautiful ride and the better choice if you stay in Brienz, because Brienz lies on this line.

You take a train from the airport to Lucerne (about 1 hour 10 minutes, CHF 31 full fare) and change there to the Luzern-Interlaken Express (CHF 34 to Interlaken Ost). The Express climbs past Lake Sarnen and Lake Lungern to the Brünig Pass and then drops down to Meiringen and along Lake Brienz. Bought as two tickets, this route costs CHF 65 instead of CHF 77. To Brienz the difference in time almost disappears: on a sample morning the connection via Lucerne reached Brienz in 2 hours 44 minutes, the one via Bern and Interlaken in 2 hours 35 minutes.

This is the one part of your route we know from our own trip. On July 4, 2026, we came from Basel via Lucerne and drove up the Brünig road, which follows the railway for long stretches. The view of Lake Lungern from above is the moment you feel you have arrived in the mountains. Seat reservations on the Luzern-Interlaken Express are optional; they cost extra and are not needed outside the busiest summer days.

Luggage on Swiss trains

You can take your luggage on Swiss trains for free and there is no fixed limit, as long as you can lift and carry your bags yourself. There are racks above the seats and luggage spaces at the ends of the carriages; on crowded trains SBB asks travellers to keep the aisles and doors free.

The direct train is the best option with big suitcases, because you do not have to move them at all. If you change in Bern, the next train usually leaves a few minutes later; with two large bags each, plan the change calmly rather than running. If you prefer to travel light, SBB offers two services:

  • Luggage door to door: SBB collects your bags at one address in Switzerland and delivers them to another. It costs a flat CHF 50 per trip plus CHF 12 per item, up to 23 kg each. Standard delivery takes until day three; the express option for CHF 50 extra delivers on the same day between 17:00 and 20:00 if collected between 7:00 and 9:00. Zurich Airport and Interlaken are both in the express area. Order by noon the day before.
  • Flight luggage for your trip home: on the day before your flight you drop your suitcase at a staffed station such as Interlaken Ost and pick it up at the SBB luggage counter at Zurich Airport on the day of the flight, between 6:30 and 21:00. It costs CHF 24 per item, the express flat rate CHF 30. You need a ticket for the whole route.

With a Swiss Travel Pass, SBB’s same-day luggage services are up to 50 percent cheaper for travel dates from October 1 to December 15, 2026, according to Swiss Travel System. Where to leave your bags in Interlaken for a few hours before check-in is in our guide to luggage storage in Switzerland.

Onward from Interlaken: Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Brienz

Interlaken Ost is where you change for the valleys. From there the regional trains take 22 minutes to Lauterbrunnen, 36 minutes to Grindelwald and 17 to 20 minutes to Brienz, mostly every half hour. Counting from the airport, that puts Lauterbrunnen at about 2 hours 40 minutes, Grindelwald at 2 hours 54 and Wengen at 2 hours 55.

Destination From Interlaken Ost Total from Zurich Airport (best case)
Brienz 17 to 20 min, train 2 h 35
Lauterbrunnen 22 min, train 2 h 40
Grindelwald 36 min, train 2 h 54
Wengen change in Lauterbrunnen 2 h 55
Mürren via Lauterbrunnen, cable car to Grütschalp, train 3 h 08
Spiez (on the way) direct train stops here 1 h 48

Two practical points. At Interlaken Ost the trains to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald stand on the same platform and run coupled as far as Zweilütschinen, so board the right part: the Lauterbrunnen section leaves from platform 2A, the Grindelwald section from 2B. And for Brienz, the BLS boat across Lake Brienz is a lovely alternative in summer, but with big luggage and after a long flight the 17-minute train is the better idea. If you have not booked your bed yet, our guide to where to stay in the Bernese Oberland compares Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Brienz as a base.

Private transfer and taxi

A private transfer takes you from the arrivals hall to your hotel door in about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours, without changes. A taxi costs around €350 according to Welcome Pickups, while a pre-booked Welcome Pickups sedan cost a fixed €331 including taxes in our price check for a weekday at the end of October 2026 (about 2 h 12 to Interlaken Ost). Minivans for bigger groups start at around €470 with Suntransfers.

The taxis wait outside the arrivals hall of both terminals and run on the meter, so the price depends on traffic. With a pre-booked transfer you pay a fixed price, the driver waits for you with a name sign even if your flight is late, and you go straight to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald or Wengen without the change in Interlaken. Two practical notes: for Wengen and Mürren no car can take you to the door, because both villages are car-free; the driver drops you at the valley station in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. And for the price of a transfer for one person, the train is unbeatable.

The calculation changes with a group. For four adults the train costs CHF 308 at full fare, close to a transfer, and the transfer saves you two changes with luggage and children. For families arriving on a morning flight from the US, that comfort can be worth the difference.

Rental car: route, vignette and parking

By car the drive from Zurich Airport to Interlaken is about 132 km and takes about 1 hour 55 minutes via Lucerne and the Brünig Pass. The route via Bern is longer, about 184 km and 2 hours 20 minutes, but runs almost entirely on motorways. Both need the Swiss motorway vignette, which is already on the windscreen of cars rented in Switzerland.

The Lucerne route is the one we drove ourselves from Lucerne onwards, and it is the more beautiful: motorway to Lucerne and past Lake Sarnen, then the Brünig road with the view of Lake Lungern, and down to Brienz and along the lake to Interlaken. Fuel for the trip costs roughly CHF 17 in a mid-sized petrol car; we paid around CHF 1.84 per litre during our week.

  • Vignette: CHF 40, valid for the whole year, required on all motorways. Rental cars picked up in Switzerland have it; if you rent in Germany or France, buy the e-vignette before you cross the border. Our guide to driving in Switzerland explains vignette, speed limits and fines.
  • Picking up: airport pick-up usually costs more than a city branch, and drivers under 25 pay a daily surcharge. Ask whether you may cross borders before you leave.
  • Parking: most hotels in Interlaken and Brienz have parking, often for a fee. In Lauterbrunnen the Parkhaus below the station costs CHF 18 for 8 hours. Wengen and Mürren are car-free.

Is a car worth it? For our week it was the right call, because we did a different valley every day with our dog Miley and never waited for a connection. If you plan to stay in one place and ride trains and cable cars, a car mostly stands in the car park and costs money every day. Our pass calculation shows the same picture: with a car we paid less for tickets, without a car a pass would have saved us money.

Which option for whom?

For most travellers the train is the best choice: it is fast, frequent and costs CHF 77 per adult or less. A private transfer makes sense for groups of three or four with a lot of luggage, and a rental car only if you will use it during your stay.

Group Train, full fare Train with Half Fare Card or Travel Pass Private transfer
1 adult CHF 77 (≈ US$93) CHF 38.50, or free on a pass day from about €331
2 adults CHF 154 (≈ US$186) CHF 77, or free on a pass day from about €331
2 adults, 2 children 6 to 15 CHF 231 with half-price children children free with the Swiss Family Card from about €331
4 adults CHF 308 (≈ US$373) CHF 154, or free on a pass day from about €331
  • Train: solo travellers, couples, anyone with a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass, and everyone who will not drive during the holiday.
  • Train via Lucerne: if you stay in Brienz or Meiringen, or want the scenic ride and have the time.
  • Private transfer: groups, families after a night flight, late arrivals, and guests going straight to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald with heavy bags.
  • Rental car: if you plan side valleys like Rosenlaui or the Kander Valley, travel with a dog, or stay outside the main villages. Our 7-day Bernese Oberland itinerary shows such a week by car.

Whichever you choose, have mobile data ready when you land: you will want the SBB app for live platforms and delays. Our guide to eSIM and mobile data in Switzerland explains why EU roaming does not apply here.

First and last trains, and the trip back

The first useful train leaves Zurich Airport around 5:00 and reaches Interlaken Ost at 7:28; the last one that gets you there the same night leaves at 22:46 and arrives at 1:07. For the trip home, the direct trains from Interlaken Ost to the airport left at 59 minutes past every second hour in October 2026, for example 7:59, arriving at 10:14.

If your flight lands after about 21:00, think twice about the train. After passport control and baggage claim, the last connections still work, but you arrive in Interlaken after midnight and the onward trains to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald have stopped. Either book a hotel near the airport or in Bern for the first night, or book a transfer that waits for you.

For the return, plan to be at the airport two to three hours before an international flight. From Interlaken that means leaving about five hours before departure. If you want to arrive without bags, use the flight luggage service described above and drop your suitcase at Interlaken Ost the day before. Families who travel with a dog should read our guide to the Bernese Oberland with a dog: small dogs travel free in a carrier, larger dogs need their own ticket on the train.

Construction work and timetable change in late 2026

From October 19 to December 11, 2026, the line between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost is closed for construction, and buses replace the trains on this short section. Your ticket is valid on the replacement bus. The SBB timetable shows it automatically, and some journeys to Interlaken Ost take longer during this period.

On December 13, 2026, the new Swiss timetable starts. The times in this guide are from the 2026 timetable, which is valid until December 12. The basic pattern of two trains an hour usually stays, but check the exact times in the SBB app before you book a transfer or a hotel. With the timetable change, national tickets also become more expensive: the Swiss public transport alliance announced an average increase of 3.9 percent.
