Luggage in Switzerland: Lockers, Storage and the SBB Luggage Service

Where can you leave your luggage in Switzerland? At almost every larger railway station: Interlaken Ost has 140 large lockers for CHF 10 per 24 hours (about US$12), open around the clock, and Interlaken West, Lauterbrunnen and Brienz have lockers too. If you would rather not carry your bags at all, the Swiss railways send them ahead for CHF 12 per item, ready at the destination station two days later, or straight to Zurich Airport for CHF 24. In Interlaken, storage apps such as Radical Storage start at a few euros per day. We drove to the Bernese Oberland in July 2026 and kept our bags in the car and our holiday flat in Brienz, so we did not use these services ourselves; everything in this guide comes from the official station pages and operators, checked in October 2026. It is part of our good-to-know guides for planning a trip to the Bernese Oberland.

Where can you store luggage in the Bernese Oberland?

The safest and simplest places are the lockers at the railway stations of Interlaken Ost, Interlaken West, Lauterbrunnen and Brienz. For bulky bags or longer stays there are staffed counters, and in Interlaken you can also book storage in shops through an app.

Most people who need luggage storage travel by train. They check out of a hotel in the morning, want one more day on a mountain and catch a late train to the next stop. Or they arrive before check-in and do not want to drag a suitcase around Interlaken. For both cases, the station is the natural place, because you come back there anyway. The lockers are available around the clock at all four stations, while the staffed counters keep office hours and close in the late afternoon.

Before you plan the details, think about where your trip starts and ends. If you arrive by plane and travel on by train, a rail pass may cover most of your journeys, and the SBB luggage service only needs a valid ticket for the route. Our Swiss Travel Pass calculation shows when a pass pays off, and our Bernese Oberland Pass comparison does the same for the regional pass with the numbers of our real week.

Luggage storage in Interlaken

Interlaken Ost, the main station for the Jungfrau region and Lake Brienz, has 140 large lockers that cost CHF 10 per 24 hours (about US$12) and are open around the clock. Interlaken West, closer to the town centre, has 51 lockers in two sizes for CHF 5 and CHF 8.

Station (October 2026) Lockers Size (cm) Price per 24 hours Maximum Payment
Interlaken Ost 140 large 44.7 x 88 x 61.5 CHF 10 (≈ US$12.10) 144 hours Coins, cards, Apple Pay
Interlaken West 36 small 24.8 x 75 x 42 CHF 5 (≈ US$6.05) 72 hours Coins, Mastercard, Visa, Twint
Interlaken West 15 large 44.7 x 88 x 61.5 CHF 8 (≈ US$9.70) 72 hours Coins, Mastercard, Visa, Twint

A large locker at these sizes takes a big checked suitcase; a small one is made for a cabin-size case or a backpack. Prices are the same in high and low season. The regular rental is 24 hours; if you stay longer, you pay the extra time when you open the locker again, up to the maximum. After that, the operator empties the locker and you collect your things at the counter against a fee, so do not push it to the limit.

Which station is better depends on your plan. Interlaken Ost is where the trains to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Brienz and the boats on Lake Brienz start, so it suits a day trip into the mountains. Interlaken West is next to the shops and the boats on Lake Thun and suits an afternoon in town. Both have staffed luggage counters with office hours; at Interlaken Ost you can also hand in flight luggage for Zurich Airport there, which we explain further down.

Lockers in Lauterbrunnen and Brienz

Lauterbrunnen station has 21 lockers: 12 small ones for CHF 8 and 9 large ones for CHF 10 per 24 hours, paid by card or Twint. Brienz has 17 lockers in three sizes for CHF 10 to 14, and they only take cards.

Station (October 2026) Lockers Size (cm) Price per 24 hours Maximum Payment
Lauterbrunnen 12 small 25 x 75 x 40 CHF 8 (≈ US$9.70) 72 hours Cards, Apple Pay, Twint
Lauterbrunnen 9 large 47 x 93 x 61 CHF 10 (≈ US$12.10) 72 hours Cards, Apple Pay, Twint
Brienz 8 size L 35.1 x 85.5 x 94.5 CHF 10 (≈ US$12.10) 72 hours Cards only
Brienz 6 size XM 52.5 x 85.5 x 45.7 CHF 11 (≈ US$13.30) 72 hours Cards only
Brienz 3 size XL 52.5 x 85.5 x 94.5 CHF 14 (≈ US$16.95) 72 hours Cards only

Lauterbrunnen is the gateway to Mürren, Wengen and the Schilthorn, and on a summer day 21 lockers fill up quickly. If they are all taken, the counter in the station accepts larger items for CHF 8 per piece, daily from 7:20 to 17:00. That is the option for a big suitcase if you want to spend the day in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and travel on in the evening, but plan to be back before the counter closes.

The station sits directly above the Parkhaus Lauterbrunnen, which we used on July 6, 2026; from there it is a few minutes on foot to the main street and to Staubbach Falls. If you come by car, the boot is the better locker anyway. For tours that start in the valley, these are the options we would look at:

Brienz, where we stayed, is quieter. Its station is right on the lake next to the boat landing and the steam railway to the Brienzer Rothorn, and its lockers are the biggest in our list: the XL size takes even a large suitcase standing upright. Bring a card, because the machine does not take coins. The ticket counter is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 18:00, the luggage service Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 15:30.

Staffed left-luggage counters

At staffed counters you hand your bags to a person and collect them during opening hours. They are the better choice for bulky items, for more than three days and for anything that does not fit into a locker.

According to SBB, prices at the counters follow the local locker tariffs and range from CHF 6 to 16 per day (about US$7.25 to 19.35); for a full month there is a fixed price of CHF 120 (about US$145). Each item may weigh up to 23 kg, and because space is limited, the counter can turn bags away on busy days. In Lauterbrunnen the price is clearly posted: CHF 8 per item.

  • Interlaken Ost: luggage counter daily 7:30 to 16:30, phone +41 33 828 73 20.
  • Interlaken West: luggage service Monday to Saturday 7:00 to 16:45, Sunday 8:00 to 16:45.
  • Lauterbrunnen: daily 7:20 to 17:00, larger items CHF 8 each.
  • Brienz: luggage service Monday to Saturday 8:00 to 15:30, closed on Sunday.

The weak point is the closing time. If you come down from the Schilthorn on the last cable car, your bag is locked behind a closed counter. For an evening pick-up, a locker is the safer option.

Storage apps: Radical Storage and Bounce

Storage apps let you leave bags in shops, cafés or hotels that work with them, booked and paid online. In Interlaken, Radical Storage lists two locations from €3.90 per day, and Bounce starts at CHF 3.90 per day.

The idea is simple: you book a place in the app, show the confirmation at the partner, the staff tag your bag and keep it until you collect it. Radical Storage lists one location near Interlaken West on the Postgasse and one in the town centre in a restaurant, with opening hours such as 11:00 to 18:30. Its prices start at €3.90 per bag and day according to its own page, and the individual listings show about €5. The booking includes a guarantee of up to €10,000 per booking against loss, theft or damage, and cancellation is free.

Bounce lists partners near Interlaken Ost from CHF 3.90 per day, with protection of up to US$10,000. Opening hours depend on the partner, and many Swiss businesses close early on Saturday and stay closed on Sunday, so check the hours of your exact location before you book.

Compared with a station locker, an app is often cheaper per bag and can be closer to your hotel. The station is better if you return late, travel on Sunday or want certainty without depending on a shop’s opening hours.

SBB luggage service: send your bags ahead

The Swiss railways transport suitcases from one station to another for CHF 12 per item (about US$14.50). You hand them in today and collect them at the destination station the day after tomorrow, so you can travel the day in between with only a daypack.

This is one of the most useful Swiss services for a trip with several stops. Say you spend two nights in Lucerne and then move to Interlaken: you drop your suitcases at Lucerne station the day before you leave, take the scenic train with a small bag, and pick up the suitcases at Interlaken Ost. The service works between many Swiss stations and needs a valid ticket or travelcard for the whole route.

  • Price: CHF 12 per piece of luggage, CHF 20 per bicycle, CHF 30 per e-bike.
  • Timing: drop off today, collect the day after tomorrow. At BLS travel centres you hand in by 19:00 and collect from 9:00 two days later.
  • Free storage: the arrival day plus four more days, then CHF 5 per day.
  • Weight: up to 23 kg per item; each bag needs a label with name, address and phone number.
  • Not allowed: commercial goods, perishable items and removals.

If you want your bags picked up from your hotel and delivered to the next one, SBB offers a door-to-door service. The “Luggage special” for selected hotels and holiday homes costs a flat CHF 44 per journey for one to four items (about US$53), CHF 66 for five to eight and CHF 99 for nine to sixteen. You book by noon the day before collection, and the bags arrive two days after pick-up; there are no collections or deliveries on Sundays. Not every accommodation is served, so check your address when you book.

Luggage to and from Zurich Airport

You can send your suitcases from a Swiss station to Zurich Airport for CHF 24 per item (about US$29): hand them in the day before your flight, collect them at the SBB luggage counter at the airport and check them in with your airline yourself. Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West are among the participating stations.

At Interlaken Ost the drop-off for flight luggage to Zurich Airport is open daily from 7:30 to 16:30. On the day of your flight, the SBB counter at the airport hands out bags between 6:30 and 21:00. The service needs a valid ticket for the route, the 23 kg limit applies, and bicycles and surfboards are excluded. It does not replace check-in: you still take your suitcase to the airline desk, but you travel to the airport by train without it.

The other direction works from abroad: you check your bags in at a foreign airport and collect them at a Swiss station, normally the day after next. You need your flight details, a customs declaration and a green plastic cover for each item. On arrival, Zurich Airport station also has SBB lockers if you want to leave a bag for a short trip into the city.

If you are planning the airport day itself, our guide from Zurich Airport to Interlaken compares the train with its change in Bern, a private transfer and a rental car. A pre-booked transfer is the one option where luggage plays no role at all, because the driver loads it at the terminal and unloads it at your hotel.

Suitcases on trains, buses, boats and cable cars

You can take normal travel luggage on Swiss trains, PostBuses, boats and cable cars without an extra ticket, as long as you can carry it yourself and keep aisles and doors free. The problem is not the rules, but the space on busy summer services.

On the main lines from Zurich and Bern to Interlaken, the trains have luggage racks above the seats and space between the seat backs. On the narrow-gauge lines into the mountains and in the cable cars it gets tighter, and the PostBus into the Lauterbrunnen Valley can be full on a July morning. Large suitcases make every change slower, and the region has a lot of changes: train to Lauterbrunnen, bus to Stechelberg, cable car to Mürren.

The boats on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun are the most relaxed way to move with luggage, but also the slowest; the trip from Interlaken Ost to Brienz takes about 1 hour 15 minutes by boat against about 20 minutes by train. When we watched the MS Brienz leave Iseltwald on July 10, the upper deck was full. If you can, move your heavy bags on the train or with the luggage service and keep the boat for the day trip. More about the villages and boats on the lake is in our Lake Brienz guide.

Mürren and Wengen: car-free villages with a suitcase

Mürren and Wengen cannot be reached by car, so every suitcase has to come up by cable car or train and then be pulled through the village. With a small case and a rucksack that is easy; with two large suitcases it becomes a workout.

To Mürren you take the cable car from Stechelberg or the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and the mountain railway on to Mürren. We rode up from Stechelberg on July 9, 2026, and the new station in Mürren sits at the edge of the village; from there the lanes run between chalets, with some slopes. Wengen is reached by train from Lauterbrunnen. If you stay up there for several nights, ask your hotel how guests get their luggage from the station, and consider leaving the big suitcase in a locker in Lauterbrunnen and going up with only what you need.

That is also the reason why many visitors with a car stay down in the valley or in Brienz and go up to Mürren for the day. Our guide on where to stay in the Bernese Oberland compares the bases, and our Mürren guide shows the village itself.

How we did it: a car as a locker

We did not need any luggage storage on our trip, because we came by car and stayed for the whole week in one holiday flat in Brienz. Our bags went from the car into the flat on July 4 and back on July 11.

That is the big advantage of a road trip with one base: you unpack once. On the day trips we only took what we needed for the day, and everything else stayed in the flat. The car itself was our moving storage room, with a cool box for drinks and a seat cover on the back seat for our dog Miley. On the day of arrival and departure, when everything was in the car, we kept the stops short.

If you combine a few nights in different places with a car, the boot covers most of the storage question, and car parks at the valley stations such as the Parkhaus Lauterbrunnen are right next to the trains and cable cars. Everything about the vignette, parking prices and mountain roads is in our guide to driving in Switzerland.

Travelling light: our packing tips

The less you carry, the less you need to store. For a summer week in the Bernese Oberland, one medium suitcase or a large rucksack per person plus a daypack is enough, if you pack for layers instead of outfits.

  • One daypack each for the day trips: water, rain jacket, a warm layer for the summits, sun cream and a power bank.
  • Layers instead of bulk: we had five days above 30 °C in Interlaken during our week, while the summits are much cooler; a fleece and a thin rain jacket cover both.
  • Shoes with grip: one pair of good walking shoes is enough for gorges, wet steps and mountain trails.
  • Wheels or straps: on cobblestones and steep village lanes, a rucksack is easier than a case with small wheels.
  • Laundry: many holiday flats have a washing machine; that halves the clothes you need.

What the weather in July really looked like, day by day, and what we would pack next time is in our guide to the Bernese Oberland in July. And if you want to stay online on the road without roaming fees, our guide to eSIMs in Switzerland explains our setup.

Are there lockers at Lauterbrunnen station?

Yes, 12 small lockers for CHF 8 and 9 large ones for CHF 10 per 24 hours, paid by card or Twint. When they are full, the counter takes larger items for CHF 8 each, daily from 7:20 to 17:00.

How does the SBB luggage service work?

You hand in your bag at a station with luggage service and collect it at the destination station the day after next. It costs CHF 12 per item, up to 23 kg, and you need a valid ticket for the route.

Can I send my luggage to Zurich Airport by train?

Yes. Hand it in at a participating station such as Interlaken Ost the day before your flight and collect it at the SBB counter at Zurich Airport between 6:30 and 21:00. It costs CHF 24 per item, and you check it in with your airline yourself.

Is there a limit on luggage on Swiss trains?

There is no fixed number of bags, but you must be able to carry your luggage yourself and keep aisles and doors free. On busy trains, buses and cable cars, large suitcases are a nuisance, so travel light or send them ahead.

How do I get my suitcase to Mürren?

By cable car from Stechelberg or via Grütschalp from Lauterbrunnen, then on foot through the car-free village. With heavy luggage, ask your hotel how it handles arrivals, or leave the big case in a locker in Lauterbrunnen.
