About us: who writes Swiss Detours

Swiss Detours is written by Alexander Haselhoff, travel filmmaker and guidebook author from the Stuttgart area in Germany. Every place in these guides we visited ourselves, with our own photos and our own videos. When we write that the cable car was full at 10 a.m. or that the clouds rolled in over the Eiger at 11, it is because we stood there.

Why Swiss Detours

Most Switzerland guides list the same ten sights. We like the detours: the small lake an hour’s walk below the summit, the village street at seven in the evening when the day visitors have left, the parking lot that saves you an hour. That is what the name stands for.

How we travel and research

  • We go there. Our first Bernese Oberland trip was from July 4 to 11, 2026, based in Brienz. The date of our visit is shown at the top of every guide.
  • Our own photos and videos. If a photo comes from someone else, we name the source.
  • Prices from the source. Ticket prices, timetables and parking fees come from the official operators and carry an “as of” date. Switzerland is expensive, so we show prices in Swiss francs and in US dollars.
  • Travelling with a dog. Our dog Miley comes along. If a place is good or bad for dogs, you will read it here.

Videos

For many places there is a video on our YouTube channels: Alex the Traveler in English and Alex Travels in German. The guide on this website gives you the facts you need to plan; the video shows you what it really looks like.

Books

Alexander has written travel guidebooks in German, including “Wunderschöner Schwarzwald” about the Black Forest and guides to the German Baltic coast. A Switzerland book is in progress.

Independent

We pay for our trips ourselves. The website is financed by affiliate links, which you can read about in How we earn money.
