Pilatus Golden Round Trip 2026: Prices, Route and the Cheapest Ticket for You

The Pilatus Golden Round Trip takes you from Lucerne by boat to Alpnachstad, up the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 metres, down by aerial cableway and panorama gondolas to Kriens and back to Lucerne by city bus. In 2026 it costs CHF 119.80 per adult in second class (about US$145), CHF 59.90 with a Half Fare Card, and it only runs from May to October because the boat and the cogwheel railway rest in winter. The Silver Round Trip swaps the boat for a 16-minute train and costs CHF 94.20. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, do not buy either package: the boat and the bus are free with the pass, and you only pay the mountain section for CHF 42. Below you find which ticket is cheapest for you, the timetable logic, and the 2026 closures that catch many visitors out. To be clear: we have not been up Pilatus ourselves. Our own trip in July 2026 was in the Bernese Oberland, so this is a planning guide built on the operator’s 2026 prices and timetables, checked in October 2026.

How the Golden Round Trip works

The Golden Round Trip is a one-day loop from Lucerne that uses four means of transport: a lake steamer or motor ship to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up to Pilatus Kulm, the “Dragon Ride” aerial cableway and the panorama gondolas down to Kriens, and bus line 1 back into Lucerne. You can ride it in either direction, and the ticket covers all four legs for one day.

Clockwise, which is the classic version, you board the boat at pier 2 opposite Lucerne railway station. The ride to Alpnachstad takes between about 1 hour 10 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the departure, with stops along the southern arm of Lake Lucerne. In Alpnachstad an underground passage leads straight from the landing stage to the valley station of the cogwheel railway, so the change is quick.

The cogwheel railway climbs 1,635 metres in altitude over 4.6 kilometres. Pilatus-Bahnen states a maximum gradient of 48 percent and an average of 38 percent, which makes it the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. The ride up takes about 27 minutes, the ride down 33. The line opened in 1889 as a steam railway, was electrified in 1937 and has run with new red railcars since June 2023.

From the summit you take the “Dragon Ride” aerial cableway to Fräkmüntegg and the small four-seater panorama gondolas to Kriens, about 40 minutes in total. From the valley station in Kriens it is a 5 to 10 minute walk to the bus stop “Kriens, Zentrum / Pilatus”, and bus 1 brings you back to Lucerne in about 11 minutes. Counter-clockwise you do the same in reverse: bus to Kriens, gondolas up, cogwheel railway down, boat back.

Pilatus prices 2026

In 2026 the Golden Round Trip costs CHF 119.80 with a second class boat ticket, the Silver Round Trip CHF 94.20, and the mountain alone CHF 84 return in summer. Every one of these prices is halved with a Swiss Half Fare Card or SBB Half Fare Travelcard, and children aged 6 to 15 pay the same half price.

Ticket (summer 2026) Adult Half Fare Card, children 6 to 15
Golden Round Trip, 2nd class boat, incl. bus CHF 119.80 (≈ US$145) CHF 59.90
Golden Round Trip, 1st class boat, incl. bus CHF 136.80 (≈ US$166) CHF 68.40
Golden Round Trip without the bus (ends in Kriens) CHF 115.00 CHF 57.50
Silver Round Trip, 2nd class train, incl. bus CHF 94.20 (≈ US$114) CHF 47.10
Silver Round Trip, 1st class train, incl. bus CHF 98.00 CHF 49.00
Mountain round trip, Kriens or Alpnachstad, any combination CHF 84.00 (≈ US$102) CHF 42.00
Single ride Alpnachstad or Kriens to Pilatus Kulm CHF 42.00 CHF 21.00
Dog over 30 cm, mountain round trip CHF 14.00

The first class surcharge only applies on the boat: you sit on the upper deck. On the railway and the cable cars there are no classes. In winter, from December to April, only the gondolas and cableway from Kriens run, and the return ticket Kriens to Pilatus Kulm costs CHF 60 (CHF 30 reduced).

Groups of ten or more get 30 percent off, but only at the ticket office on the day. Day tickets such as the SBB Saver Day Pass are not valid on Pilatus, and neither is the Bernese Oberland Pass. Pilatus-Bahnen recommends a seat reservation for the cogwheel railway on busy days; a reservation cannot be cancelled, but you can move it to another time slot up to 30 minutes before departure.

Which ticket is cheapest for you

The cheapest ticket depends on the pass in your pocket: with a Swiss Travel Pass you pay CHF 42, with a Half Fare Card CHF 59.90 for the Golden Round Trip, with a Lucerne Travel Pass nothing extra, and without any pass the Silver Round Trip at CHF 94.20 is the cheapest complete loop.

Your situation What to buy Cost for the Golden Round Trip
Swiss Travel Pass Only the mountain section at the reduced price; boat and bus are free with the pass CHF 42 (≈ US$51)
Swiss Half Fare Card (CHF 150 for a month) Golden Round Trip at half price CHF 59.90 (≈ US$72)
Lucerne Travel Pass Nothing; the pass covers the boat, the bus and the mountain CHF 0 extra
Eurail or Interrail Mountain section at 50 percent; check what your pass covers on the boat from CHF 42
No pass, budget first Silver Round Trip (train instead of boat) CHF 94.20 (≈ US$114)
No pass, best experience Golden Round Trip, 2nd class CHF 119.80 (≈ US$145)

The Swiss Travel Pass point is where many people overpay. Pilatus-Bahnen answers it directly: with the pass you travel free on the boat and bus and only need a discounted ticket for the ascent and descent. If you buy the full Golden Round Trip package with a pass in your pocket, you pay for the boat twice. On the Swiss Activities booking page, choose the option “mountain only” from Kriens or Alpnachstad and select your reduction card.

For a family the maths is friendly: children from 6 to 15 pay half, CHF 59.90 for the Golden Round Trip, and children with an SBB Junior Travelcard or Children’s Co-Travelcard ride free. Visitors from abroad get the free Swiss Family Card with a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card, so their children travel free on the boat and bus; whether it also covers the Pilatus mountain section is not stated by the operator, so count on the children’s half price there.

Whether a Swiss Travel Pass or the Half Fare Card is the better buy for your whole trip is a separate question. We did the maths with real 2026 fares in our guide to the Swiss Travel Pass; for two or three days based in Lucerne, also compare the regional Lucerne Travel Pass, which makes Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis free.

Golden or Silver Round Trip?

Choose the Golden Round Trip if you want the boat cruise and have five to six hours; choose the Silver Round Trip if you are short on time or budget, because the train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad takes only 16 to 17 minutes and saves CHF 25.60 per adult.

The boat is more than transport. The route along the Lucerne shore, past Hergiswil and into Lake Alpnach shows Pilatus growing in front of you, and on a sunny day it is a relaxed hour on deck. The catch is the timetable: in 2026 the boats to Alpnachstad leave Lucerne roughly once an hour, some only on weekends or in the main summer season, and the last boat back leaves Alpnachstad at 17:38. If you miss it, the S5 train from Alpnachstad to Lucerne runs every 30 minutes, but it is not part of the Golden Round Trip ticket, so you would pay for it unless you have a Swiss Travel Pass or another rail pass.

A good plan for the Golden Round Trip in summer: take the 9:38 or 10:38 boat from Lucerne, ride up by cogwheel railway around midday, spend one to two hours at the top and descend via Kriens in the afternoon. In the opposite direction you avoid the morning queue at Alpnachstad, which builds up on fine summer days, but you depend on the boat timetable for the return in the late afternoon.

Season, timetable and closures

The Golden and Silver Round Trips run from May to October only. In 2026 the cogwheel railway operates from May 11 to November 29, the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad until October 18, and the gondolas and cableway from Kriens close for maintenance from October 19 to November 27, 2026.

  • Summer (mid-May to mid-October): everything runs, round trips possible in both directions. Cogwheel railway departures from Alpnachstad every 35 minutes from 8:45 to 16:20, with extra trains at 8:10, 16:55 and 17:30 on some days. Gondolas from Kriens from 8:30, last descent to Kriens around 17:45.
  • Late October to late November 2026: no boat, no gondolas. Access only by train to Alpnachstad and cogwheel railway up and down. A round trip is not possible.
  • Winter (December to April): the cogwheel railway does not run. You go up and down from Kriens by gondola and cableway, CHF 60 return.

Weather decides more than the calendar. Pilatus often sits in cloud while Lucerne is sunny, or rises above a sea of fog in autumn while the city is grey. Check the summit webcam on pilatus.ch before you leave, and keep in mind that the cogwheel railway can close in strong wind or snow. A flexible ticket that you can cancel free up to 24 hours before helps on uncertain days.

What you do at the top

At Pilatus Kulm you get a panoramic view over Lake Lucerne, the Central Swiss Alps and on clear days the Bernese Alps, a choice of short walks on secured paths, two hotels with restaurants and, on the way down, a family area with rope parks and a summer toboggan run at Fräkmüntegg.

  • Short summit walks: the Esel and the Oberhaupt viewpoints are each a short walk from the station; the Dragon Path leads through a rock gallery with windows over the abyss. Plan one to two hours at the top.
  • Food: Restaurant Pilatus-Kulm and Hotel Bellevue are at the summit; a picnic works too. Prices are mountain prices.
  • Fräkmüntegg: the intermediate station on the Kriens side has the Pilatus Rope Park, the Fräkigaudi toboggan run and the Dragon Glider. You can get off on the way down and continue later with the same ticket.
  • Alpine ibex: ibex live on the rocks around the summit; Pilatus-Bahnen even sells an “Ibex Safari” package with an overnight stay.

If you want sunset and sunrise without the crowds, Pilatus-Bahnen offers overnight stays at the summit hotels. Note that the round trip ticket is only valid for one day, so for an overnight stay you buy the transport separately.

Where to buy tickets

You can buy the Golden and Silver Round Trip from Pilatus-Bahnen directly, at Lucerne station or the boat pier, or online at Swiss Activities, an official partner; in October 2026 Swiss Activities charged the same CHF 119.80 and CHF 94.20 as the operator and offered free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

We link Swiss Activities because the booking is simple in English, the ticket comes as a mobile ticket, and you can pick your reduction card during booking. Its US site shows prices in US dollars, which can be a little higher than our conversion; you can switch the currency to Swiss francs. If you already hold an SBB online ticket, it scans directly at the Pilatus turnstiles. Seat reservations for the cogwheel railway are made separately on pilatus.ch.

A guided version exists as well. From Zurich, Swiss Activities sells a guided Golden Round Trip from CHF 175.20. It is worth it only if you do not want to handle the connections yourself; with a Swiss Travel Pass, the self-guided version costs a fraction.

Is Pilatus worth it, and for whom?

Pilatus is worth it for most first-time visitors to Lucerne who have one mountain day, because the Golden Round Trip combines a lake cruise, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway and a summit with a big view in one easy loop. It is less convincing if you have already seen the high Alps up close, or if you can only go in winter.

  • Worth it: a sunny day in Lucerne between May and October; travellers with a Swiss Travel Pass, because the whole loop costs only CHF 42; families, because children pay half or ride free; railway fans.
  • Think twice: if Rigi is free for you with the Swiss Travel Pass and you only have one day, Rigi costs nothing extra and has the gentler walks; see our Rigi guide. If you want snow and glacier in summer, the Titlis is the better choice.
  • Not worth it: on a cloudy day with no view, or in late October and November 2026, when you only get the cogwheel railway up and down.

Pilatus or Rigi? Pilatus is rockier, higher and more dramatic, Rigi is greener and gentler with the wider lake view. With a Swiss Travel Pass, Rigi is free and Pilatus costs CHF 42; without a pass, the Rigi day pass costs CHF 84 against CHF 119.80 for the Golden Round Trip. Many visitors with three days in Lucerne do both.

Honest downsides

The main downsides of Pilatus are queues for the cogwheel railway on fine summer days, a short season for the round trip, and a summit that can be in cloud when Lucerne is sunny.

  • Queues: the railcars hold 46 passengers each, and on summer weekends the wait at Alpnachstad can be long. Reserve a seat or ride counter-clockwise.
  • Short season: the full loop only works from mid-May to mid-October. Outside that window you get only one side of the mountain.
  • Boat timetable: boats to and from Alpnachstad are not frequent; a delay at the top can cost you the last boat.
  • Price without a pass: CHF 119.80 for a half-day excursion is a lot; the Silver Round Trip saves money but drops the best part of the journey for many.
  • Not for vertigo: the cogwheel railway runs on a narrow ledge on the steepest sections; nervous passengers should sit facing uphill.

FAQ: Pilatus Golden Round Trip

How much is the Pilatus Golden Round Trip in 2026?

CHF 119.80 per adult with a second class boat and CHF 136.80 with first class, bus included. With a Half Fare Card and for children 6 to 15 it is CHF 59.90.

Is Pilatus included in the Swiss Travel Pass?

Partly. The boat to Alpnachstad and the bus from Kriens are free, and the mountain section costs 50 percent, CHF 42. Do not buy the full round trip package with the pass.

Can I do the Golden Round Trip in winter?

No. The boat and the cogwheel railway do not run in winter. From December to April you can only go up and down from Kriens by gondola and cableway, CHF 60 return.

Which direction is better?

Clockwise, with the boat first and the cogwheel railway up, is the classic and gives the best views on the railway. Counter-clockwise avoids the morning queue at Alpnachstad but ties your return to the afternoon boats.

How long does the Golden Round Trip take?

Plan five to six hours from Lucerne, including about one to two hours at the summit. The boat alone takes 70 to 90 minutes, the cogwheel railway about 30 minutes.

Are dogs allowed on Pilatus?

Yes, on the whole round trip. Dogs over 30 cm need a ticket, CHF 14 for the mountain round trip; small dogs in a carrier ride free.
