Matterhorn Glacier Paradise 2026: Ticket Prices, Pass Discounts and Gornergrat Comparison

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the highest cable car station in Europe, at 3,883 metres above Zermatt, with a viewing platform, a palace carved into the glacier and snow all year. In October 2026 a return ticket from Zermatt costs from CHF 120 per adult (about US$145) at the operator and at Swiss Activities; the operator’s new price list gives CHF 104 for winter 2026/27 and CHF 138 for summer 2027. With a Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or GA you pay half. The ride takes about 40 minutes with two changes, and children under three are not allowed on the top section because of the altitude. Below you find all prices, the cheapest ticket for your pass, the afternoon ticket, the crossing to Italy, and an honest comparison with the Gornergrat. To be clear: we have not been to Zermatt ourselves. Our July 2026 trip was in the Bernese Oberland, so this is a planning guide based on Zermatt Bergbahnen’s prices and conditions, checked in October 2026.

What the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the summit station on the Klein Matterhorn, a rock peak in the glaciers south-west of Zermatt. At 3,883 metres it is the highest point in Europe you can reach by cable car, and a summit lift takes you up to a viewing platform with a 360-degree panorama of the Alps.

The area is a glacier world all year round. In summer it is the largest summer ski area in Europe, according to Swiss Activities, with ski runs on the Theodul glacier toward Italy. Sightseeing visitors come for three things: the view across to Mont Blanc and the Italian Alps, the Glacier Palace carved into the ice below the station, and the experience of standing at almost 4,000 metres without climbing.

The Matterhorn itself looks different from here than from the Gornergrat. You are close to it, south-west of the summit, and see it from the side, across the glacier, rather than the classic pyramid view from Zermatt’s other side. That difference matters when you choose between the two excursions; more on that below.

Prices 2026/27

In October 2026 both the operator’s shop and Swiss Activities list the return from Zermatt to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise from CHF 120. The operator’s price list for the new season shows CHF 104 for the return from November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027 and CHF 138 from May 1 to October 31, 2027. A Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or GA halves every single and return ticket.

From Zermatt (adults) Winter Nov 2026 to Apr 2027 Summer May to Oct 2027
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, return CHF 104 (≈ US$126) CHF 138 (≈ US$167)
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, one way CHF 64 CHF 69
Afternoon return from 13:30 (no other discounts) CHF 84 CHF 110
Trockener Steg, return CHF 69 CHF 92
Schwarzsee, return CHF 53 CHF 70
Testa Grigia (Italian border), return CHF 151 CHF 220

For a visit in late October 2026 the bookable price is from CHF 120, CHF 60 with a pass. Children pay according to age, and children with a Swiss Junior Travelcard or Children’s Co-Travelcard get the discount the card gives. Dogs travel free. The dynamic pricing that Zermatt Bergbahnen uses applies only to ski passes; sightseeing tickets have fixed seasonal rates, the same online and at the ticket office.

One practical point for Swiss residents: reduced tickets with a Half Fare Card or GA can be bought online only with a physical SwissPass card, which you must carry with you; the mobile SwissPass is not accepted for this. Visitors with a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card select the discount when booking and show the pass at the gate.

The cheapest ticket with your pass

With a Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or GA you pay half the return, CHF 60 at the October 2026 price; without a pass the afternoon ticket from 13:30 is the cheapest way up, and in winter the regular return drops to CHF 104.

Your situation What to buy Cost per adult
Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or GA Regular return at 50 percent CHF 60 (Oct 2026), CHF 52 in winter, CHF 69 in summer 2027
No pass, flexible on time Afternoon return from 13:30, bought on the day at the ticket office CHF 84 winter, CHF 110 summer
No pass, morning visit Regular return from CHF 104 winter, CHF 138 summer 2027
Both Zermatt summits in one day Peak2Peak (with Gornergrat) CHF 220 in July and August, CHF 165 winter; half with Half Fare Card
Several mountain days in Zermatt Peak Pass, unlimited rides 1 day CHF 190 to 234, 25 percent off with pass

The afternoon ticket is the best tip for visitors without a pass: it saves CHF 20 in winter and CHF 28 in summer. The catch is that you cannot combine it with any other discount, it is sold only at the sales points on the day, and the afternoon is when clouds are more likely on the summits. With a pass, the regular half-price ticket is always cheaper.

The bigger cost is getting to Zermatt. The train from Zurich takes about 3 hours 15 minutes; with a Swiss Travel Pass it is free, with a Half Fare Card half price. Whether the pass is worth it for your whole trip is in our guide to the Swiss Travel Pass; for a regional alternative around Zermatt and the Glacier Express route, see the Matterhorn Gotthard Pass, and for travellers who like to stay flexible, the Swiss Half Fare Card.

The ride up: Furi, Trockener Steg, Glacier Ride

From the Matterhorn Express valley station at the southern end of Zermatt you ride a gondola to Furi, change to Trockener Steg, and take the Matterhorn Glacier Ride for the last section to 3,883 metres. In the public timetable the whole trip takes about 40 to 47 minutes including the changes and the walk to the valley station.

  • Zermatt to Furi and Trockener Steg: gondolas over larch forest and moraine, with the Matterhorn on your right much of the way.
  • Trockener Steg to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: the Matterhorn Glacier Ride, a tricable gondola opened in 2018, crosses the glacier in one long span. Some cabins, called Crystal Ride, have a glass floor; they need a supplementary ticket.
  • Altitude: you go from about 1,600 to 3,883 metres in well under an hour. Zermatt Bergbahnen do not allow children under three on the section from Trockener Steg to the top, and adults with heart or breathing problems should ask their doctor first.

Go early. The morning is usually the clearest time at altitude, and the cable cars are quieter before the tour groups arrive. Check the webcams on matterhornparadise.ch before you buy; at 3,883 metres the summit can be in cloud while Zermatt is sunny.

What you do at 3,883 metres

At the top you visit the viewing platform, the Glacier Palace and the Cinema Lounge, all included in the ticket, and on a clear day you look across to the Italian Alps and a long line of high peaks; Zermatt Bergbahnen speak of 38 “Alpine giants” in view.

  • Viewing platform: the summit lift takes you to the 360-degree platform at the top of the Klein Matterhorn. This is the highlight on a clear day.
  • Glacier Palace: tunnels and halls cut into the glacier below the station, with ice sculptures; the operator calls it the highest glacier palace in the world. It is below freezing all year, so bring a jacket even in summer.
  • Cinema Lounge and InfoCube: short films about the mountain at the summit station; the InfoCube at Trockener Steg is included as well, as timetabled.
  • Snow in summer: the glacier plateau is a summer ski area, and the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing ticket includes the SnowXperience at Plateau Rosa in summer.

Plan one to two hours at the top. Move slowly: at almost 3,900 metres even stairs are hard work, and some visitors get headaches. Drink water and come down if you feel unwell.

Crossing to Italy and Breithorn

From the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise a second cable car continues to Testa Grigia on the Italian border, and from there you can ride down to Breuil-Cervinia. Zermatt Bergbahnen sell this as the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing from CHF 147.50, single or return, with stops along the way.

The crossing turns a summit trip into a day across the Alps: Zermatt in the morning, lunch in Cervinia, back in the afternoon. Bring your passport or ID card, because you cross a national border, and check the last return times carefully. For most visitors who just want the view, the regular return to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is enough.

The Breithorn at 4,164 metres rises right next to the summit station and is often called the easiest four-thousand-metre peak in the Alps. It is still a glacier climb: go only with a mountain guide. Swiss Activities lists guided beginner ascents from CHF 225.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or Gornergrat?

Choose the Gornergrat if you want the classic Matterhorn view; choose the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise if you want glacier, snow and the highest point you can reach without climbing. If you can only do one, most first-time visitors are happier with the Gornergrat, which is also gentler on the body at about 3,100 metres.

Where to buy tickets

You can buy tickets at the Matterhorn Express valley station in Zermatt, in the Zermatt Bergbahnen web shop or at Swiss Activities, which listed the return from CHF 120 in October 2026, the same as the operator, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

We link Swiss Activities because the ticket comes as a mobile ticket in English and the free cancellation helps on a mountain where the weather decides everything. Zermatt Bergbahnen offer an optional cash-back guarantee insurance on their own tickets, which is an alternative if you buy there. On the US version of Swiss Activities prices appear in dollars and may be slightly above our conversion; you can switch to Swiss francs. The afternoon ticket is only available at the sales points in Zermatt.

Is it worth it, and for whom?

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is worth it if you want to stand among glaciers at almost 4,000 metres, see snow in summer, or look into Italy, and if the weather is clear. It is less worth it as your only Zermatt mountain if the classic Matterhorn view is what you came for.

  • Worth it: glacier and snow lovers; travellers who have already done the Gornergrat; summer skiers; anyone combining it with the crossing to Cervinia.
  • Think twice: with small children, because under-threes may not go to the top; with health problems at altitude; if you plan the Jungfraujoch or the Titlis on the same trip, which give you a similar glacier experience.
  • Not worth it: in cloud at the summit, which is common. Check the webcam on the morning of your visit.

Honest downsides

The main downsides of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are the altitude, a price that is high for a short visit, and a summit that is often in cloud.

  • Altitude: at 3,883 metres headaches and shortness of breath are common. Children under three are not allowed at the top.
  • Price: from CHF 104 to CHF 138 for the return depending on season, plus extras like the Crystal Ride.
  • Weather: the summit is more exposed to cloud and wind than the Gornergrat; on bad days the platform shows nothing.
  • Not the classic Matterhorn view: the mountain looks different from here, closer but less iconic.
  • Changing prices: the October 2026 booking price (CHF 120) and the new season list (CHF 104 and CHF 138) differ, so check the price for your date before you plan your budget.
