Gotthard Panorama Express: Boat and Train from Lucerne to Lugano

+4The Gotthard Panorama Express combines a boat across Lake Lucerne with a first-class panoramic train over the historic Gotthard line to Lugano, in about five and a half hours. Swiss Activities sells the complete first-class ticket including boat, train and seat reservation for CHF 164 (about US$198); every passenger, also with a Swiss Travel Pass, pays a compulsory supplement of CHF 24 that includes the seat reservation. It runs in spring, summer and autumn only: the 2026 season ended on October 18, the 2027 season starts on April 17, 2027, and SBB opens bookings in January 2027. There is one departure per direction and day of operation. A cheaper alternative is the regular boat plus the hourly Treno Gottardo on the same mountain line, without any reservation. We have not made this trip ourselves; this guide is based on the prices and rules of SBB and Swiss Activities for 2026. It is part of our comparison of Swiss scenic trains.

How the Gotthard Panorama Express works
The trip has two parts: a historic paddle steamer or motor ship across Lake Lucerne between Lucerne and Flüelen, and a first-class panoramic train between Flüelen and Lugano over the original Gotthard line of 1882, not through the new base tunnel. You change once, in Flüelen, where the pier and the station are next to each other.
The boat part is the slower and calmer half: about 2 hours 45 minutes past Weggis, Vitznau, Brunnen and into the narrow Lake Uri below steep cliffs. The train part takes about two and a half hours and climbs the Reuss valley in loops around the church of Wassen, crosses the Alps in the old Gotthard tunnel and descends into the Leventina to Bellinzona and Lugano. Between the two you have 14 minutes going south and 25 minutes going north, enough to walk from the pier to the platform.
The train has large panoramic windows and, according to travellers’ reports, a photo coach with windows you can open. Commentary along the way explains the history of the line.

Prices and the compulsory supplement
Swiss Activities sells the complete trip from Lucerne to Lugano for CHF 164, including the first-class train, the first-class boat, the seat reservation on the train and a table reservation in the ship’s restaurant. On top of any ticket or pass, SBB charges every passenger a compulsory supplement of CHF 24, which includes the seat reservation, regardless of the route.
| You hold | What you pay | About |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing | CHF 164 complete ticket, 1st class, incl. reservation (Swiss Activities); at SBB CHF 164 plus CHF 24 = CHF 188 | US$198 (SBB US$228) |
| Swiss Travel Pass or GA, 1st class | CHF 24 supplement | US$29 |
| Swiss Travel Pass or GA, 2nd class | CHF 24 supplement plus CHF 31.50 1st class upgrade Lucerne to Lugano (CHF 20 from Arth-Goldau) | US$67 |
| Half Fare Card | CHF 82 plus CHF 24 supplement = CHF 106 (SBB) | US$128 |
According to SBB, the regular 1st class fare from Lucerne to Lugano by boat and train is CHF 164 plus the compulsory CHF 24 reservation, CHF 188 in total, and CHF 82 plus 24 with a Half Fare Card. Swiss Activities lists its complete ticket at CHF 164 including the reservation, so without a pass it is the cheaper way to book, as long as it is bookable for your date.
Children under 6 travel free, children from 6 to 15 pay half or travel free with a Swiss Family Card, but the supplement is charged per person. Cancellation with Swiss Activities is free up to 24 hours before departure; if you miss the boat or the train, the ticket is not refunded.

With Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or GA
With a first-class Swiss Travel Pass the Gotthard Panorama Express costs you only the CHF 24 supplement. With a second-class pass the boat is covered, but you need a first-class upgrade for the train section from Flüelen to Lugano plus the supplement. With a Half Fare Card you pay reduced fares plus the full supplement.
The trip fits well into a Swiss Travel Pass tour: Lucerne to Lugano is a long journey that would otherwise cost far more than a day of the pass, and the boat alone is a big part of that value. If you are deciding between a first- and second-class pass, this trip and the Glacier Express Excellence Class are the two places where first class makes a real difference. Our guide is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it shows how to check whether the pass pays off for your whole route, and the Lucerne Travel Pass covers the boat part if you stay in Central Switzerland.
Timetable and season
In 2026 the Gotthard Panorama Express ran from April 18 to October 18 with one connection in each direction per operating day. For 2027 SBB has announced the restart on April 17, 2027, with bookings from January 2027. In the autumn of 2026 the booking calendar on MySwitzerland showed departures from Tuesday to Sunday; check the operating days for your date.
| 2026 timetable | Southbound | Northbound |
|---|---|---|
| Boat | Lucerne 11:12, Flüelen 13:55 | Flüelen 12:00, Lucerne 14:47 |
| Train | Flüelen 14:09, Lugano 16:41 | Lugano 09:18, Flüelen 11:35 |
| Train number / boat course | train 3093, boat course 13 | train 3092, boat course 18 |
Departure times: Swiss Activities and SBB; arrival times as published for 2026. The 2027 timetable may differ.
Because there is only one connection per day, plan the Gotthard Panorama Express as a fixed travel day between Lucerne and Ticino. Southbound you have the whole morning in Lucerne; northbound you leave Lugano after breakfast and arrive in Lucerne for a late lunch.

Check the Gotthard Panorama ExpressHighlights: lake, Wassen church and the old tunnel
The highlights are the boat into the fjord-like Lake Uri, the spiral loops around Wassen, where you see the village church from three sides, the light show in the 15-kilometre Gotthard tunnel of 1882 and the descent through the Leventina to the castles of Bellinzona.
- Lake Lucerne and Lake Uri: the southern arm of the lake narrows between steep rock walls; this is the landscape of the Swiss founding legends around the Rütli meadow and the Tell chapel.
- Flüelen: pier and station side by side at the southern tip of the lake.
- Wassen church: the line climbs in loops and helical tunnels, so the white church appears above, beside and below you.
- Gotthard tunnel: the train slows down for a light installation on the history of the tunnel, according to reports from the trip.
- Leventina and Biaschina: more loops and viaducts on the way down into Ticino.
- Bellinzona: the three castles of the town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the train passes them before Lugano.
The scenic difference to a normal train through the base tunnel is huge: the fast trains spend about 20 minutes underground and skip all of this. That is why the old mountain line is worth riding at least once, with or without the panoramic train.
Luggage, food, dogs and direction
Luggage transport between Lucerne Bahnhofquai and Lugano is included for individual passengers, up to 23 kg per piece; you hand it in at least 10 minutes before departure, at pier 1 in Lucerne or on the platform in Lugano. That is a real advantage over the Glacier and Bernina Express, where space is tight.
- Food: the Swiss Activities ticket includes a table reservation in the ship’s restaurant, so you can have lunch on the lake. Meals are paid separately.
- Dogs: small dogs up to 30 cm shoulder height travel free in a carrier, larger dogs need a half-price second-class ticket or a dog day pass, according to Swiss Activities.
- Direction: southbound you start relaxed on the lake and end in Ticino in the late afternoon; northbound you have the train in the morning and the long boat ride in the afternoon sun. Both work; choose the one that fits your onward plan.
- Side: both sides have views; reports suggest the right side northbound for Wassen church. A photo coach lets you switch sides.
Getting there: from Zurich Airport you reach Lucerne in about 1 hour 10 minutes, at a full second-class fare of CHF 31, as we checked for our guide from Zurich Airport to Interlaken. Pier 1 is right in front of Lucerne station, so the walk from train to boat takes a few minutes. In Lugano you arrive at the station above the old town; a funicular takes you down to the lake. We would plan a night in Lucerne first, so you are at the pier at 11:12 without rushing from the airport.
If you continue from Lugano to the Engadin, the Bernina Express bus leaves Lugano at 10:00 for Tirano, which makes a classic three-day circle with the Bernina Express to St. Moritz or Chur.

The cheaper alternative: boat plus Treno Gottardo
You can do almost the same trip without the Gotthard Panorama Express: take a regular boat from Lucerne to Flüelen and then the Treno Gottardo, the hourly regional express of the Südostbahn over the same mountain line to Bellinzona and Locarno; for Lugano you change in Bellinzona. You pay normal fares in second class, need no reservation and can choose your departure.
The Treno Gottardo runs every hour from Zurich or Basel via Lucerne and takes about 3 hours 6 minutes from Lucerne to Locarno, according to holidaystoswitzerland.com; a reservation is optional at CHF 5. It has normal large windows, not panoramic ones, and no commentary, but the Wassen loops and the old Gotthard tunnel are exactly the same. With a second-class Swiss Travel Pass it costs you nothing extra, which makes it the obvious choice if you hold a second-class pass and do not want to pay for an upgrade.
The boat to Flüelen runs several times a day in summer. If you only want a lake trip from Lucerne, our guide to Lake Lucerne cruises covers tickets and day passes.

Is the Gotthard Panorama Express worth it?
It is worth it if you travel from Lucerne to Ticino anyway, hold a first-class pass, and want a relaxed day with the boat, the old Gotthard line and your luggage taken care of. It is less worth it with a second-class pass, out of season, or if you mainly want the scenery, which the boat plus Treno Gottardo shows you for much less.
| Gotthard Panorama Express | Boat plus Treno Gottardo | |
|---|---|---|
| Class | train 1st class only | 1st or 2nd class |
| Reservation | compulsory, CHF 24 supplement | optional, CHF 5 |
| Departures | one per direction and operating day | boat several times a day, train hourly |
| Luggage transport | included | not included |
| Season | April to October | all year (boat timetable reduced in winter) |
Who should book it: first-class pass holders, couples on a once-in-a-lifetime tour, and travellers with heavy suitcases who like the idea of their luggage arriving in Lugano on its own. Who should take the alternative: budget travellers, second-class pass holders and anyone travelling outside the season.
